Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Or, at least that’s how the old saying goes. It was absolutely the case for Shannon and Connor. I was so lucky to be the wedding photographer for their classic and elegant InterContinental wedding.
I knew when I first met them for their windy city engagement session that their wedding day would be really special. And, I was right! With a ceremony at the exquisite St. James Chapel and a classic reception at the InterContinental, everything about their elegant Chicago InterContinental wedding day reflected their love: it was timeless.
The day began with Shannon getting ready with her mother and bridesmaids. The wedding colors for this elegant wedding were a flawless combination of tiffany blue, navy and grey. I loved how the sophisticated color scheme reinforced the classic and elegant feel of the day. Even the beautiful bouquets, designed by Janet Gallagher, elevated the feeling of the day. Shannon and the girls prepared in the hotel while September light streamed in through the huge windows.
Connor got ready separately with his father, brothers and Shannon’s brothers. I loved how they snuck in a fun detail to personalize their stylish tuxedos: each of the groomsmen wore superhero socks! When groomsmen find small and subtle ways to personalize their looks, it’s always fun to see.
Once everyone was ready, the bridal party traveled separately to St. James Chapel. Every time I have the chance to photograph weddings at St. James Chapel it’s a treat. The chapel is truly magnificent. Located in a bustling commercial neighborhood on Chicago’s Gold Coast, it’s such a surprise. With its French Gothic Revival design, arched stained-glass windows and soaring vertical buttresses, it feels like stepping into a fairy tale when you walk inside!
Shannon looked every inch a fairy tale princess when she began her walk down the aisle. Connor was visibly struck by her beauty. The moment when he saw his bride coming down the aisle was amazing. It looked like he couldn’t breathe for a moment! There was a full wedding mass with readings, a unity candle, a formal exchange of vows, a blessing of rings, kiss of peace, and communion. And when Shannon and Connor were pronounced husband and wife, it was met with celebration from the whole congregation.
After the ceremony, we took advantage of the beautiful chapel for photos. From there, we went to a beautiful garden for additional photos with the bride, groom and wedding party. I really thought that these photos captured the fun, silly side of the entire wedding party! Now that the ceremony was over, everyone became a little bit more playful, laughing and joking together. When it started to rain, it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. Shannon and Connor, if anything, smiled even brighter as they leaned into each other.
Weddings at the InterContinental are amazing. The InterContinental is one of Chicago’s most iconic historic hotels and the interior offers a beautiful backdrop for elegant weddings. The ballroom was truly magnificent, with a glittering chandelier. After a warm welcome from Shannon’s father, the amazing meal was served. Speeches were given, laughter was shared, and soon it was time for the dances.
Shannon, Connor, thank you for asking me to be your InterContinental wedding photographer. It was such a pleasure to be there to photograph what was clearly one of the best nights of your lives. I hope you had a wonderful honeymoon in St. Lucia, and that you love your wedding photos as much as I do!
